Evaporators are where refrigerant absorbs heat and where a cold room actually gets cold. Fin spacing is the specification that decides whether the coil runs cleanly or ices up weekly, and it is the one most often left to the supplier’s default.

Fin Spacing and Defrost
Fin spacing follows the room temperature: 4 to 4.5mm for chill duty where heat transfer dominates, 7 to 9mm for freezing where frost needs somewhere to go, wider still for blast work. Defrost method matters just as much — hot gas and water flush clear a coil far faster than electric heaters and put much less heat back into the room, which compounds daily below -25C. For ammonia or CO2, the coil must be stainless, not copper.
