Refrigeration & Heat Exchange Equipment

Refrigeration and heat exchange equipment is where most of the energy in a cold chain is either saved or wasted. The pages below cover the full circuit — compressors and condensing units that reject the heat, evaporators and air coolers that absorb it, dry coolers and heat exchangers that move it between fluids, and the fans that drive air across every coil in the system.

Choosing Refrigeration Equipment

Three decisions determine whether a system performs and what it costs to run. Temperature band comes first: a compressor optimised for chill duty is inefficient at freezing and fails early below its envelope. Refrigerant comes second — R404A is being phased down in favour of R448A, R449A, R290 and CO2, and buying an R404A-only unit today means a retrofit later. Compressor type comes third: scroll for quiet, low-maintenance commercial duty, semi-hermetic reciprocating where rebuildability matters, screw for large continuous loads.
