Axial Flow Fans

Axial flow fans move a lot of air against very little resistance, which makes them the default for wall openings, roof extraction and short duct runs. Where they fail is the moment real static pressure appears — a long duct, a filter or a grease trap will stall an axial fan that looked more than adequate on paper. With 96 suppliers listed, sizes run from 100mm equipment fans to metre-plus industrial ventilators.

How to Specify an Axial Fan

Work from the system resistance, not the free-air airflow figure. Then choose blade material: aluminium for heat, stainless for corrosive or wash-down air, plastic for damp and cost-sensitive duty, cast iron where a spark would be dangerous. Bearing type decides service life — ball bearings for continuous or horizontal running, sleeve only for light intermittent use. For hazardous areas, only a certified flameproof motor will do.
