WhyThe system curve decides everything

Fan selection lives or dies on the system curve, and this is where most industrial ventilation money is wasted. A fan quoted at a free-air airflow figure will deliver a fraction of that once ductwork, bends, filters and a discharge stack have added static pressure — and the buyer discovers this only after installation, when the hood no longer captures. The correct comparison is always airflow at the system's design static pressure, from the fan's published curve.

HowMatching fan type to pressure regime

Establish two numbers before looking at any product: the required volume flow, and the static pressure the system will impose at that flow. Then match the fan type to the pressure regime — axial fans for high volume at low pressure, backward-curved centrifugal for medium to high pressure at good efficiency, and radial or paddle-blade impellers where the air carries dust or fibre that would clog a curved blade. Add the environmental requirements last: explosion protection, high-temperature construction, or corrosion-resistant materials.

Questions buyers ask

How do I choose between an axial, centrifugal and radial fan?
By the pressure the system imposes and by what is in the air. Axial fans move large volumes efficiently when resistance is low — short duct runs, wall and roof extract. Backward-curved centrifugal fans hold their volume as resistance rises, which makes them right for ducted systems with filters and bends. Radial or paddle-blade impellers are less efficient but their straight blades will not accumulate dust, so they handle particulate-laden air that would progressively unbalance a curved impeller.
Why does my new fan move less air than its rating?
Almost certainly because the rating was free-air airflow and your system has static pressure. Every metre of duct, every bend, every filter and the discharge stack itself all add resistance, and the fan moves down its own performance curve as a result. The number to compare when buying is airflow at the design static pressure, taken from the fan curve — not the headline figure.
When is an explosion-proof fan legally required?
Whenever a flammable or explosive atmosphere may be present in the airstream or around the fan — solvent vapour from paints and coatings, combustible dust from wood, grain or metal, or flammable process gas. The requirement covers the whole assembly: motor certification, non-sparking impeller and housing materials, and bearing protection. Local classification of the zone determines the required category, so classify the zone before selecting the fan.
