Air change rate comes from the application

A cleanroom needs 30–60 changes an hour because its classification is defined by particle count and only dilution holds it. A warehouse needs 4–8 because the requirement is simply air quality for people. Using one figure for both produces either an unbuildable system or a non-compliant one.

Free-air ratings are not what you get

Fan datasheets headline the airflow at zero resistance. Real systems have ductwork, filters, louvres and a discharge — commonly 100–300 Pa in total, and rising as filters load. Always compare at your system pressure, taken from the fan curve.

Fan power rises with the cube of speed

Halving the speed cuts airflow in half but reduces power to about an eighth. That relationship is why variable speed and generously sized ductwork pay for themselves, and why over-specifying airflow is expensive for the whole life of the installation.

Questions about this calculation

How many air changes per hour does my space need?
It follows the application: roughly 2–4 for offices, 4–8 for warehouses, 10–20 for fume-generating workshops, 30–40 for commercial kitchens and livestock tunnel ventilation, and 30–60 or far more for classified cleanrooms. Regulated spaces must follow the applicable standard.
Why does the fan deliver less air than its rating?
Because the rating is usually free-air. Every metre of duct, every bend, filter and louvre adds static pressure and moves the fan down its performance curve. Select on airflow at the system pressure, not the headline number.
How much does raising airflow cost to run?
More than most people expect: fan power varies with roughly the cube of speed, so a 25% increase in airflow costs about twice the power. That is why specifying a comfortable margin on airflow is far more expensive than specifying a comfortable margin on duct size.
