WhySound is the binding constraint

In a hotel bedroom the binding constraint is sound, not capacity. A unit that cools perfectly at 45 dB(A) will generate complaints and poor reviews regardless of how well it performs thermally, because the guest is trying to sleep three metres from it. The second constraint is control: rooms are empty much of the day, and the ability to set back an unoccupied room is one of the largest energy savings available to a hotel. Both are decided at specification and cannot be fixed afterwards.

Specify indoor sound pressure at low fan speed as a hard limit alongside capacity, and be sceptical of a single headline dB figure without the operating condition attached. Choose inverter-driven compressors so the unit runs continuously at low output rather than cycling — quieter, and better at holding a stable room temperature. Provide per-room control that integrates with the property management system for occupancy setback, and size domestic hot water on the real morning peak, which in a hotel is short, severe and non-negotiable.

Questions buyers ask

What noise level is acceptable in a hotel guest room?
The quieter the unit runs at its lowest fan speed, the fewer complaints the property gets — and a guest three metres from the indoor unit notices differences of only a few decibels. Compare units on sound pressure at low speed at a stated distance, not on a single headline figure, and treat it as a hard requirement rather than a tie-breaker.
Why do hotels specify inverter systems rather than fixed-speed?
Because a fixed-speed compressor answers a part-load room by switching fully on and fully off, which the guest hears each time and feels as a temperature swing. An inverter runs continuously at reduced output, so the room stays at setpoint, the unit stays quiet, and part-load efficiency — which is nearly all the time — is much better.
How should hotel domestic hot water be sized?
On the real peak, which in a hotel is a sharp morning demand as most guests shower within the same couple of hours. Sizing on daily average will fail that peak every single day. The usual answer is a heat pump sized for the bulk load with storage and a boiler to cover the peak, rather than sizing either technology alone for the worst case.
