Heat exchangers transfer heat between two fluids without mixing them, and the geometry chosen determines both performance and serviceability. Plate exchangers pack enormous surface into a small volume. Shell and tube handles high pressure and temperature. Finned tube moves heat between a liquid and air. Each dominates a different corner of the market for good engineering reasons.

Choosing a Heat Exchanger
Plate gives the highest heat transfer per unit volume and the lowest approach temperature — ideal where space is tight and fluids are clean. Gasketed plates can be opened and cleaned; brazed cannot. Shell and tube is the only sensible option above roughly 30 bar or 300C, and tolerates dirty fluids. Material follows chemistry: stainless for general duty, titanium for chlorides and seawater, and never copper with ammonia.
