Central packs give the best efficiency at scale and keep heat and noise out of the shop, but need a machine room, long pipe runs and a large refrigerant charge that will leak over time. Distributed R290 plug-ins eliminate field pipework and leakage entirely and are far quicker to install, at the cost of rejecting their heat into the sales floor — which the shop's air conditioning then has to remove. Questions buyers ask

Central pack or self-contained plug-in cabinets?
Central packs are more efficient at scale, keep compressor heat and noise out of the sales floor, and suit large stores — but they need a machine room, long field pipework and a large refrigerant charge that leaks over the system's life. Plug-in R290 cabinets have no field pipework at all, install in a fraction of the time and cannot leak a large charge, but they reject their heat into the shop. Small and convenience formats increasingly go plug-in for exactly these reasons.
Why are supermarkets moving to R290?
Propane has a GWP of about 3 against roughly 3,900 for R404A, and it is thermodynamically more efficient as well, so it answers both the regulatory and the energy problem at once. Its constraint is flammability, which caps the charge per system — which is precisely why it suits small self-contained cabinets rather than large central plant.
How much of a store's electricity does refrigeration use?
Typically 40–60% of total consumption in a food store, far ahead of lighting or air conditioning. That concentration is why refrigeration efficiency measures — variable-speed compressors, night blinds, doors on chilled cases, floating head pressure — pay back faster in retail than almost anywhere else.
