WhatStorage that has to be provable

Pharmaceutical storage works to defined bands — most commonly 2–8 °C for vaccines and biologics, 15–25 °C for controlled room temperature, and −20 °C or lower for certain products. What separates it from food cold storage is not the temperature but the evidence requirement: continuous monitoring, mapped temperature distribution, alarms, and records that satisfy an inspector years later.

WhoWho buys it

Pharmaceutical distributors and wholesalers, hospital and clinic pharmacies, vaccine programmes and public health agencies, clinical trial logistics providers, and the validation consultants who qualify the installations.

WhyWhy redundancy is not optional

A single excursion outside the band can require the entire stored batch to be quarantined and, in many cases, destroyed — regardless of whether the product is actually affected, because it cannot be proven otherwise. The value at risk is normally many times the equipment cost, which is why N+1 refrigeration, backup power and independent alarms are standard rather than upgrades.

HowSpecifying for qualification

Design for uniformity, not just setpoint: the temperature has to be within band everywhere in the room, including near doors and at the top of racking, which is what mapping will check. Provide redundant refrigeration so one failure does not breach the band. Fit independent monitoring that does not share a power supply or sensor with the control system, and make sure the equipment documentation supports IQ/OQ/PQ — retrofitting paperwork is far harder than specifying it up front.

What to check before you order

R290 Refrigerant 117
Efficient and low-GWP for smaller self-contained units.
Energy Saving 861
These rooms run continuously for the whole life of the facility.
Stainless Steel 1,488
Cleanable, non-shedding surfaces for GMP areas.
Variable Speed 72
Holds a stable band instead of cycling around it — stability is what mapping rewards.

Questions buyers ask

What temperature band do vaccines need?
Most vaccines are stored at 2–8 °C, though some require −20 °C or ultra-low temperatures — the product licence sets the requirement. What matters for equipment selection is that the band must be held everywhere in the room and evidenced continuously, not merely achieved at the control sensor.
Why does pharmaceutical storage need redundant refrigeration?
Because a single excursion can force quarantine or destruction of the whole stored batch, whether or not the product was actually harmed — it cannot be proven otherwise. With inventory value normally many times the equipment cost, N+1 refrigeration plus backup power and independent alarms is the economically obvious choice.
What is temperature mapping and why does it affect equipment choice?
Mapping places sensors throughout the empty and loaded room to demonstrate that every location stays within band, including near doors and at the top of racking. It rewards even air distribution rather than raw capacity, which is why evaporator selection and placement matter more here than in food storage.
