WhatStorage that has to be provable
Pharmaceutical storage works to defined bands — most commonly 2–8 °C for vaccines and biologics, 15–25 °C for controlled room temperature, and −20 °C or lower for certain products. What separates it from food cold storage is not the temperature but the evidence requirement: continuous monitoring, mapped temperature distribution, alarms, and records that satisfy an inspector years later.
WhoWho buys it
Pharmaceutical distributors and wholesalers, hospital and clinic pharmacies, vaccine programmes and public health agencies, clinical trial logistics providers, and the validation consultants who qualify the installations.
WhyWhy redundancy is not optional
A single excursion outside the band can require the entire stored batch to be quarantined and, in many cases, destroyed — regardless of whether the product is actually affected, because it cannot be proven otherwise. The value at risk is normally many times the equipment cost, which is why N+1 refrigeration, backup power and independent alarms are standard rather than upgrades.
HowSpecifying for qualification
Design for uniformity, not just setpoint: the temperature has to be within band everywhere in the room, including near doors and at the top of racking, which is what mapping will check. Provide redundant refrigeration so one failure does not breach the band. Fit independent monitoring that does not share a power supply or sensor with the control system, and make sure the equipment documentation supports IQ/OQ/PQ — retrofitting paperwork is far harder than specifying it up front.
Equipment this application needs
Controlled rooms
Cold Room Storage74
Panel rooms for 2–8 °C and frozen bands, with door and access design that limits excursions.
Redundant packs
Condensing Units429
N+1 arrangement so a single failure does not breach the temperature band.
Uniform air distribution
Evaporators74
Even distribution matters more than raw capacity — mapping fails on hot spots, not on average temperature.
Ultra-low & secondary
Chilling Equipment88
Lower bands for specific products, and glycol systems that keep refrigerant charge out of the storage area.
Monitoring & controls
Refrigeration & Heat Exchange Parts120
Sensors, controllers and alarm devices — independent of the control system, because a shared failure defeats the purpose.
What to check before you order
- R290 Refrigerant 130
- Efficient and low-GWP for smaller self-contained units.
- Energy Saving 1,205
- These rooms run continuously for the whole life of the facility.
- Stainless Steel 2,070
- Cleanable, non-shedding surfaces for GMP areas.
- Variable Speed 106
- Holds a stable band instead of cycling around it — stability is what mapping rewards.
- CE Certified 1,692
- Documentation that supports qualification in regulated markets.
