Cooling Towers

Cooling towers reject heat by evaporating a small part of the circulating water, which is far more effective than air cooling and why they remain standard on large HVAC and process installations. The open or closed circuit decision determines both performance and how much water treatment the site will live with.

Open or Closed Circuit

Open circuit towers are cheaper and more efficient, but the process water is exposed to the atmosphere and picks up dirt, algae and scale — meaning continuous chemical treatment and legionella management. Closed circuit towers keep the process fluid sealed inside a coil, removing that burden entirely at higher capital cost. Counter flow extracts more heat per unit of airflow than cross flow, in a taller package.
