Concentrate cooling where cows crowd and heat up: the holding pen before milking is the single worst place for heat stress, followed by the feed line and the freestall rows. High-volume circulation fans over the stalls create the air velocity that carries heat away from the animal. In dry climates add evaporative cooling at the inlet; in humid climates soakers combined with air movement work where evaporative cooling does not. Air movement is the constant — without it, wetting cows achieves very little.

At what temperature do dairy cows start losing production?
Earlier than most expect — heat stress begins around 22 °C once humidity is taken into account, well before the animals look distressed. Because the effect appears first as reduced feed intake and lower yield rather than visible discomfort, barns are often under-ventilated for weeks before anyone connects the bulk tank figures to the weather.
Where should cooling be concentrated in a dairy barn?
The holding pen first: cows crowd together, generate heat, and cannot move away, so it is consistently the worst heat-stress location on the farm. After that, the feed line — where reduced intake directly cuts yield — and then the freestall rows where cows rest.
Do soakers work better than evaporative cooling?
It depends on humidity. Evaporative cooling relies on the incoming air being dry enough to absorb moisture, so it works well in arid climates and poorly in humid ones. Soakers wet the cow directly and rely on air movement to evaporate that water from her skin, which works in humid conditions where evaporative cooling fails. Both need substantial air movement — wetting cows without moving air over them accomplishes very little.
