Pit ventilation therefore runs continuously and is not simply part of the room extract. Equipment mounted in or near the pit airstream faces the most aggressive environment in agricultural ventilation.

Questions buyers ask

Why does a swine barn need separate pit ventilation?
Because the slurry pit releases hydrogen sulphide and ammonia continuously, and those gases must be drawn away from the animal space rather than through it. Pit extract runs continuously on its own path; relying on room extract alone pulls pit gases up through the slats and into the air the animals and workers breathe.
What temperature should a farrowing room be?
It is a deliberate compromise: roughly 20 °C suits the sow, while newborn piglets need close to 30 °C. Rather than splitting the difference — which suits neither — the room runs at the sow’s temperature and the piglets get a separately heated creep area. Heating the whole room to piglet temperature would overheat the sow and waste a great deal of energy.
Why do finishing pigs need so much cooling?
Pigs cannot sweat, so they shed heat by radiation, conduction to cool surfaces, and air movement. At market weight they produce a lot of metabolic heat, and above roughly 25 °C feed intake and growth fall away. Air velocity over the animals is the practical tool, which is why finishing barns use tunnel ventilation.
