The defining constraint is not the load — a few kilowatts is trivial — it is that nobody is there. A filter that needs monthly attention will not get it. A fault that requires a site visit costs more than the equipment. So the specification shifts towards sealed, low-maintenance designs, remote monitoring that actually reports, and redundancy sized so a single failure does not mean an emergency call-out.

Questions buyers ask

Why not just use a normal air conditioner for a small edge site?
Comfort air conditioning is designed for occupied spaces with a large latent load and intermittent operation. An IT room has almost no latent load and runs continuously at part load, which makes a comfort unit cycle constantly, wear quickly, and dehumidify pointlessly. Equipment intended for continuous sensible cooling lasts longer and runs at a fraction of the energy.
Does a single-rack site really need N+1?
Usually yes, and for economic rather than technical reasons: at an unattended site the cost of an emergency call-out and the downtime while someone travels there normally exceeds the cost of a second small unit. Two half-capacity units also run at better part load than one oversized one.
How is noise handled at edge sites?
By specifying it as a hard limit up front, since it is very hard to fix afterwards. Large slow-turning fans are quieter than small fast ones for the same airflow, EC drives allow night setback, and equipment placement relative to neighbours matters as much as the unit’s rating.
