In a high-bay building, warm air rises and stays there. A 10 m warehouse commonly runs several degrees warmer at roof level than at floor level in winter — heat that was paid for, is doing no useful work, and is increasing loss through the roof. In summer the same stratification traps a hot layer that radiates back down all afternoon.

WhyWhy moving air beats adding capacity

Destratification recovers heat that is already in the building rather than producing more. It also improves comfort at working level without changing the setpoint, and in summer, air movement across the skin provides a cooling sensation of several degrees at a fraction of the energy that mechanical cooling of the same volume would need. For most warehouses, mechanical cooling of the full volume is not economically defensible; air movement is.

Destratification is specified on the floor area each unit can cover and on achieving a gentle, continuous mixing flow — not on air change rate, which is a ventilation concept. Large-diameter, low-speed fans move a great deal of air quietly and are usually the right answer in high bays; smaller high-velocity units suit lower ceilings and spot duty. Keep them clear of racking that would block the column of air, and run them continuously at low speed rather than intermittently at high.

Questions buyers ask

How much heat is trapped at roof level in a warehouse?
It varies with building height, insulation and heating type, but a temperature difference of several degrees between floor and roof is normal in a high-bay building, and radiant or warm-air heating widens it. That heat was paid for, does nothing useful at roof level, and increases loss through the roof — which is what makes recovering it worthwhile.
Do destratification fans work in summer too?
Yes, but through a different mechanism. In winter they recover trapped heat; in summer the air movement they create across the skin produces a cooling sensation worth several degrees at working level, without cooling the building volume. For most warehouses, where mechanical cooling of the whole volume is not economic, this is the only practical answer.
How are these fans sized?
On floor area coverage per unit and on achieving gentle continuous mixing — not on air changes per hour, which is a ventilation metric and does not apply. Check that racking layout will not block the airflow column, since a fan discharging into the top of a rack run accomplishes very little.
