How does layer ventilation differ from broiler ventilation?
Broiler houses ramp from near-zero to maximum over a six-week crop; layer houses run a steady rate for 70 weeks or more. That changes the priorities: reliability and serviceability with birds in the house matter more than peak capacity, and manure drying becomes part of the ventilation duty rather than a separate concern.
Why is manure drying part of the ventilation system?
Because ammonia is produced by wet manure. Drying it on the belt stops the ammonia forming, which is far more effective than extracting it after it has entered the house air. Belt drying air is therefore designed and distributed separately from house ventilation, and getting it right improves air quality more than raising the extract rate does.
Can equipment be replaced without depopulating the house?
It has to be, given a 70-week occupancy — so plan for it. Choose fans and motors that can be serviced from outside or from a walkway, hold spares on site, and avoid designs where replacing a unit means shutting down a whole ventilation stage.
